Android Smartphone Without a data plan?

The time has come for me to get a new phone. I wanted a droid x, but I cannot pay for the monthly data plan. So, you might ask, why would you need a android smartphone without a data plan? The answer is simple. Next year I’m going to a Magnet high school that specializes in Information Technology. I get my A+ certification, oracle database programming experience, java experience, ect. In short, everything I will be doing will be connected to the internet, but I also will have times that I need to access the internet from a personal device. Wifi will be available pretty much wherever I go, so a $30 data plan is unnecessary, as well as expensive. I want an android phone that I can activate, without a monthly data plan. As a second priority, I would like a nice phone. I have saved up enough money to pay up to and around $200.

(Please don’t tell me to get a tablet. I also need a new phone, and I’m not getting 2 things.)

Sorry, but it’s not possible. It’s just the sad truth.

      All smart phones are required to have internet on it. Here is what you can do;
-Buy an Android phone (Droid X),
-On your calling plan, DO NOT get any minutes on it (or the lowest amount of minutes you can get).
-Once you get the phone, download an application called Google Voice.
Pick a number & wah-la, you get a free phone number for unlimited calling & texting.

            Smartphone, Data Plan

I understand your dilemma, I have pre-ordered the Droid device myself at BestBuy. I am quite familiar with Verizon price plans, In your case I would recommend doing what i shall be doing once I get the phone. Verizon offers Data/Texting plan for $54.99….plus tax & insurance maybe around $60, but you have to figure no matter what carrier or price plan your on, your looking at least a minimum of $50 for the services. Mind you I did not mention anything about a Voice Plan; the plan I’m referring only offers Unlimited Data and Texting ONLY.

Droid X shall come with Skype Mobile pre-installed. Why not take advantage of this? I’ve researched the subscriptions @ skype and I’ll be paying at least $30 for a 12month/1year subscription for Unlimited TALK throughout the United States and Canada, (additional fee to include Mexico) This is more coverage than I need currently seeing as how I don’t travel outside the country too often, Even so I have an Unlock Iphone3G for that anyhow. So pretty much a One time fee of $30.00 shall get your Unlimited Calling for the Entire year, and all im really paying verizon is for the Internet/text capability.
I shall probably throw in another one-time payment of $30 towards PdaNet so I can Tether my Netbook instead of shelling out $30/month for the Mobile Tethering feature standard to Verizon. So let’s figure the savings…..

            Lowest V-Priceplan: $39.99 + Unlmited Texting $59.99
            Data/Internet Priceplan: 29.99
            Asurion Phone Insurance: $7.99

            – $97.98 / Month (before tax) –

The Verizon Priceplan is $54.99 for Unlimited data/text. $62.98(before tax) with 7.99 Insurance at a difference of $35 even. Thus, bearing such things in mind, I’m willing to pay $65-$70 rather than $100-$110 and still have Unlimited Texting, Voice and Data (+Mobile Tethering) Granted I would have to pay a one time fee of $30 for Unlimited Voice & seperate fee for Mobile Tethering feature, but that’s just simply a savings not worth passing on.

Bottom Line: VOIP IS THE FUTURE.
            Without Savings: $1535.76 per year.
            With Savings: $755.76 per year.

-Fyi, If I Include Mobile tethering feature it would actually cost $127.98/mo. compared to $62.98/mo.
