Internet access on tablets?

I am thinking of buying a tablet chiefly for one reason: so I can access Netflix during my daily bus commute and when I’m at the gym. Thus, I absolutely need a tablet that can generate its own wireless internet (3G/4G whatever, sorry I’m not good with the tech terms). I have two questions to this extent.

1. What are the buzzwords I should be looking for as I browse tablets? Is “wi-fi” what I’m seeking?

2. I see that several tablets appear to run an operating system similar to a smartphone – Android, for instance. Thus, when I get an iPad/tablet, does it connect in any way to my phone plan? Do I buy a data plan like a phone, or is it a stand-alone internet portal, like a computer?

Thanks a ton! Sorry for the stupidity.

You will want 3G/4G It will say so. There is usually a $100 or so premium over WiFi only models, unless you but it from a phone provider with a contract.

All major tablets run Androud or iOS.

You need to subscribe to a data plan to be able to use 3G/4G.
